The Point of it All

Sunday's storm wasn't all it was forecast to be.  Even so, it was bitingly cold, blowy, and beautiful.  And, on a weekend, which meant the side roads went unplowed for hours at a time.  Road Skiing! I was looking for company on my adventure, but my family was all involved in projects of their own.... Continue Reading →

Back to Homeschool

Earlier this month I did a phone interview with a local newspaper about not-back-to-school rituals of homeschoolers in our area (we have a lot of homeschoolers around here).   Wylie was pushing me to make up some crazy rituals to pass off as tradition-- namely burning ant hills in the backyard or anything else involving flame... This is what we left behind (not the child).   And here is where we landed: We had a short, but sweet stay in Clearwater Beach, FL, visiting with Grampy and running in the Clearwater Marathon.  The kids basically spent 4 days in the pool. It wasn't hot, but it sure wasn't Maine. It was a... Continue Reading →

The temps finally climbed above zero (up to 25°F!) yesterday and we got out for a gorgeous ski.  Days of subzero temps and fresh powder make for perfect ski snow.  Daisy was so happy to finally be able to run again!

Try Slowing Down

A few weeks ago a quote from Lily Tomlin appeared in my inbox: "For fast-acting relief, try slowing down". That's one of my resolutions for this 2018.   Along with a few other goals, one of my intentions is to organize our week with the aim of being home more often, and for longer... Continue Reading →

The Shortest Day

It's been festive here this week;  cookie making and swapping, gift shopping and wrapping, lots of making in the kitchen, at the sewing machine, with paints and wax.  Outside the weather is cooperating for the holidays with about 10 inches of white powder keeping everything very greeting card-ish.  We got the skis down from the... Happy Birthday Kale!

My baby boy is 8 today.   I can't believe it, yet looking at him it must be true.   We spent a few minutes this morning looking through old pictures and videos taken the first few months of his life.   He is every bit as funny and good-natured now as he was then.  And still in... Two weeks ago the harvest began in earnest.  It's a small scale affair here, but still, as much as I can (or want) to handle.  I'm still working on sauce (apple and tomato), onions are curing in the screen porch, the garlic is now cut and stored, with some set aside to go in the ground. ... Birthdays and more

Rob has a habit of calling Juniper "sweet girl" (which she truly is) but I am quick to jump in and correct any gender stereotyping, and remind them both of all of her other amazing qualities--clever, strong, kind, sassy... So her new nick name has become, "Sweet girl, ahem  (throat clear)" which indicates all the... Continue Reading →

Summer Vacation

We've been doing it properly.  Lots of fun running with friends (including the Rocklobster Relay, 200 miles from Bar Harbor to Portland), 4th of July weekend at the Lake with the Fowler cousins and second cousins, a week camping at Mount Desert Island, the first week of Farm Camp at Toddy Pond Farm, and somehow, time for...
